Botox Twice as Effective as Anti-Depressants

Botox, usually used to make lines vanish, may also cause depression to disappear. A small study found that Botox, injected between the eyebrows of chronically depressed patients, relieved depression symptoms in nine out of 10 – almost twice the success rate of anti-depressants.
Dermatologist Eric Finzi tested 10 women who had a history of major depression. Seven of the 10 had found little success with standard anti-depressants, and none of them had ever been treated with Botox. After treatment, all but one improved. One woman began to feel depressed again after about two months, but another round of Botox caused her depression to vanish once again.
Finzi has a theory as to why Botox fights depression: feedback from facial muscles regulates the brain, and since Botox makes people stop frowning, the brain can’t get “sad” signals.
Botox is now used widely in the medical field. It’s used to treat migraine, improve bladder function, and help Parkinson’s disease victims control movements. It also relieves symptoms of tennis elbow, enlarged prostate and muscle spasms of stroke victims. It may also be used to fight cancer by enhancing the effects of chemotherapy treatments.
