Disabled councillor’s adventure on the waves - JournalLive

Disabled councillor’s adventure on the waves - JournalLive: "To repay pool staff, Robert decided to raise money to help them with a cause close to his heart – much-needed improvements which will open up the facility to people with more severe disabilities than himself. And boosted by his swimming exploits, Robert, who lives at Anne Crescent, opted to do so by learning to surf – sending out a message that it is possible for disabled people to get involved in the sport."

When you read the full article you will see Robert looks like he is really enjoying himself. As for me I think I would a bit cold.

Art Levine: Missouri ID Bill to Block Nuns, Elderly from Voting Defeated

Art Levine: Missouri ID Bill to Block Nuns, Elderly from Voting Defeated: "The defeat of the measure, which would have blocked at least 240,000 Missourians from voting, also enhances Obama's chances at winning the state -- and the presidency -- because he'll have an opportunity to compete in could be a fair election."

This is a great article. I can't believe the measure went that far. It just proves that persons with disabilities much continue to be actively working on individual rights

Disabled Group Calls For 'Tropic Thunder' Boycott : NPR

Disabled Group Calls For 'Tropic Thunder' Boycott : NPR: "In the new comedy Tropic Thunder, Ben Stiller plays an action movie star who once played a mentally disabled character. The actors use the word 'retard' more than a dozen times. Timothy Shriver, chairman of the Special Olympics, says the word's use leads to suffering, injustice and exclusion."

Interesting interview, the short version the "R" word is not funny at all. I think you will find the story helpful.

The Columbus Dispatch : Long, painful wait for needed care

The Columbus Dispatch : Long, painful wait for needed care: "As Ohio's economic downturn intensifies, the government is making matters even worse for Lee and many of the state's other neediest residents. Instead of giving them the help they urgently need, many are told, essentially, 'Take a number. Get in line.'"

I review stories like this one every week. The question remains. Will things change after November?

Study Seeks Genetic Roots of Cerebral Palsy - Health and Medical Information Produced by Doctors - MedicineNet.com

Study Seeks Genetic Roots of Cerebral Palsy - Health and Medical Information Produced by Doctors - MedicineNet.com: "MONDAY, July 21 (HealthDay News) — Australian researchers are recruiting 10,000 people to participate in the world's largest study of the possible genetic causes of cerebral palsy."

Seems as though everything is coming to genetic. It is getting harder to believe the research these days. First it was thought CP as caused by trauma, then low birth weight, or maybe a virus. Now it could have something to with our genes wow! I am just very happy the research is continuing.

Houston Community Newspapers Online - News Around Town > Champions Sun > News

Houston Community Newspapers Online - News Around Town > Champions Sun > News: "Taylor Kirk is a special needs student at All-Star Martial Arts in Cypress. Because she has cerebral palsy, she’s been in physical therapy all her life."

Growing up in the 50's and 60's I don't believe I would have been allowed to join a sports program like this. I know we have a long way to go to as far as including persons with special needs but it is nice to see a program like this doing well.

My point is simply kids with special needs need to be encouraged to try new paths. It seems to be working for Taylor.
